Slovakia honoured the first ever Canadian Ambassador

State Secretary of Foreign Ministry of the Slovak Republic Rastislav Chovanec praised the work of Canadian Ambassador Cheryl Cruz in Slovakia. On the occasion of the end of her three-year diplomatic mission in Slovakia. On Monday (22 July) on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Juraj Blanár, Chovanec presented Cruz with a Golden Plaque for her outstanding personal contribution to the development of bilateral relations between the Slovak Republic and Canada.

“Slovak-Canadian relations have long been at a very good level and have historically been based on strong people-to-people ties, also due to the large Slovak expatriate community in Canada. Recently, the opening of the Embassy of Canada in Slovakia, which has been officially represented in Slovakia since last year, and the state visit of the former Slovak President to Canada, which we attended together with a business mission at the beginning of this year, were among the significant events," emphasized Chovanec, adding that Cruz became the first ever Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Canada based in Slovakia after the opening of the Canadian Embassy in Bratislava.

According to the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this is a clear confirmation of the mutual interest in strengthening the partnership and exploiting the existing potential. Cruz has fulfilled her mission in the areas of economic, cultural, public, as well as sports diplomacy. One of her priorities was to actively support women's and girls' hockey in Slovakia and to establish a partnership between the Slovak Ice Hockey Federation and its partner organization Hockey Canada.
