Prime Minister responds to EC recommendations

Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) acknowledged the recommendations of the European Commission regarding its assessment of the rule of law in Slovakia and affirmed that relevant ministries will continue to engage in dialogue with the European Commission. He believes that the Commission's recommendations fail to reflect many of the measures that the governing coalition has anchored in legislation.

"At the same time, Prime Minister Robert Fico talks very openly about the egregious double standards employed by the European Commission. The European Commission is criticizing legal norms approved in a democratic, legal and sovereign manner by the highest legislative body of the Slovak Republic," stated the Government's press department.

The department suggested that the real reason for the criticism lies in the current government’s contrary stance on many foreign affairs issues, in which the European Commission expects absolute obedience from the EU member states.
