Radovan Stoklasa won the main prize at the 13th year of the journalistic photo competition Grand Prix Slovak Press Photo 2024. The award was granted "according to the relevance and importance of the event captured by the photo".
"The winning photo won as a news item, a major event, as a memento for the future, so that something like this never happens again, because it's a human life," competition director Jana Garvoldtová described the photo titled Assassination, which captures security guards carrying away the shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fica after the government meeting in Handlova on May 15.
"It is a photo from a series of photos. It already captures the moment when the prime minister is being taken away after he was hit. Despite the fact that he is not in the photo, it is a paradox for me that we all know what it is about," said Stoklasa about his photo that went around the world. The subjects of parliamentary and presidential elections, protests and a terrorist attack on the prime minister dominated the competition works. A large number of competitors mapped various social problems, environmental protection, the climate crisis and the war in Ukraine in their works.
