Materials scientists from SAV want to contribute to the acceleration of aircraft flight

Materials scientists of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) have come up with a solution that could in the future speed up the flight of airplanes. They have developed a completely new, so-called high-entropic ceramic material with exceptional properties not only at room temperatures, but especially at significantly higher temperatures for example above 2500 degrees Celsius. TASR was informed about this by the spokesperson of the SAV, Monika Tináková.

"Materials based on transition metal carbides are intended for work and use in extreme conditions as specific components for space applications, heating elements for furnaces or heat-resistant components. Such applications require excellent thermal stability, super high hardness and excellent resistance to friction and wear." said Ján Dusza from the Institute of Materials Research of the SAV. As the spokesperson added, this research subsequently stimulated the submission and solution of other new projects at the Institute of Materials Research. In the future, according to her, in the given area in Slovakia, research will be directed towards the preparation of ceramics stable at ultra-high temperatures, which no other materials known so far can handle. "In the world, several important research centers in the USA, Italy and China are engaged in this research. Together with Great Britain, the Slovak Republic has become their equal partner. The importance of this direction of research could one day lead to the production of aircrafts which would significantly shorten the flight times between continents," added the materials scientist.
