Slovak companies perceive the transition to a zero-emission economy primarily as a risk, not as a possible opportunity, Slovakia's central bank (NBS) pointed out in its publication Structural Changes 2024, referring to a European Investment Bank (EIB) survey as of 2023, according to which 46 percent of companies see this change as a risk and 13 percent as an opportunity.
Slovakia lags behind the European Union average, where the share of firms perceiving an opportunity is 29 percent. According to Milan Vanko of NBS, this is due to problems arising from the already existing large investment debt in some companies. However, green transformation of the economy won't be possible without investing in new technologies and retraining employees.
However, he stressed that investing and innovating opens the door for companies to enter new areas and markets. In addition, it can open up access to new funding and investors who are already looking for opportunities in green companies and initiatives. By taking a proactive approach to zero carbon transformation, companies can also improve their image and increase customer and partner loyalty.
