The Slovak Town Union has called on the government, relevant ministries and Parliament to pay more attention to the climate crisis and take necessary systemic measures, declaring that it is ready to cooperate at expert and partnership level.
Towns are the most vulnerable and least prepared to face the consequences of the climate crisis, according to the union. Unadapted and outdated urban infrastructure is no longer reliable and doesn't provide the necessary safety and comfort for the public. "Another important factor of vulnerability is urban expansion and construction at the expense of open green spaces, creating energy-intensive and climate-vulnerable areas," said the union’s spokeswoman Daniela Pirselova.
According to the union, one systemic measure should be a significant increase in the volume and availability of resources for local governments. At the same time, municipalities should be able to bolster their options for their own revenues and drawing of external resources. "This will not only enable the implementation of measures and a flexible response to changes, but also the economic development of Slovakia," Pirselova remarked.
