In a response to a report on the rule of law from the European commission, Minister of Justice Boris Susko (Smer-SD) claims that the EC did not understand changes that current and past government introduced in the legal system. "It is regrettable that the EC did not reflect on any positive changes implemented by the government and, on the contrary, uncritically adopted information disparaging the steps taken after the October elections," declared Susko, adding that the government was not given enough space to comment on the information presented in the EC report.
The minister claims that the European commission mainly used information from the media "against this government" in the report. According to him, the EC did not take into account the opinions of academic institutions or the opinions of lawyers or courts.
At the same time, Susko rejects criticism of the abolition of the Special Prosecutor's Office (ÚŠP). According to him, the organization of the judiciary, including the prosecutorial system, is the domain of member states. He reiterated that the Constitutional Court did not say in its judgment that the closure of the ÚŠP was unconstitutional.
According to the minister, the EC's report on the rule of law also has serious methodological flaws. He claims that the Commission drew information from the media, which is set against the government.
