Coalition representatives are set to meet this week to discuss electing a new speaker of the Parliament. After meeting with President Peter Pellegrini, deputy speaker Peter Žiga (Hlas-SD) emphasized that this position, according to the coalition agreement, belongs to Hlas-SD and the party is not interested in renegotiating the agreement.
“I think that this week there will be a coalition council where this issue will also be on the table and I believe that within the government coalition we will find an appropriate solution to solve this problem. I do not feel that Smer would change their opinion that this position belongs to Hlas-SD. I do not feel the need to open the coalition agreement,” says Žiga.
Žiga assured the President that despite the absence of an elected Speaker, Parliament is functioning, with a majority of 79 deputies supporting the government's program. The next parliamentary session begins on September 10, with around 120 points on the agenda. The speaker's position became vacant after Pellegrini's presidential win. Hlas-SD nominates Investments Minister Richard Raši, while SNS and Smer-SD have also express interest in the role.
