Police officers on Tuesday delivered a petition to Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Hlas-SD) calling for better financial and working conditions.
The petition has been signed by 800 police officers. The petition's initiator, police officer Stefan Birmon, pointed out that some 1,100 police officers recently handed in their notice and that there is nobody to replace them. He views a €5,000 bonus and a €1,000 housing subsidy as insufficient. He stressed that the problem with a lack of police officers has been around for several years now.
In reaction, the minister said that he has been communicating with police officers on their requirements. He also said that he would include an increase in police officers' salaries among the priorities of the Interior Ministry. He does not think that there is a threat of collapse in the Police Corps.
