The military will provide full cooperation in dealing with the expected excessive precipitation, if need arises, Environment Minister Tomas Taraba (SNS nominee) reported on a social network on Wednesday after discussing the issue with Defence Minister Robert Kalinak (Smer-SD) over the telephone.
Together with Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Hlas-SD), Taraba made an agreement on coordinated approaches and preparations.
"We're preparing for extreme storms that have been forecast over the neighbouring states and, unfortunately, it seems that the precipitation might become most intense above Slovakia," said Taraba.
The city of Bratislava has also convened a crisis management team due to the expected bad weather, with the aim being to check all the means and procedures for the best possible handling of the situation.
"According to meteorologists' forecasts, extremely heavy rains and winds are expected to hit Bratislava between Thursday (September 12) afternoon and Sunday (September 16). This is associated with a possible rise in the level of the Danube and Morava Rivers, or their overflowing in some locations in the floodplain," said Bubla.
The Slovak Hydrometeorological Office (SHMU) issued storm warnings for western and central Slovakia, due to apply on Thursday (September 12) and Friday (September 13).
