Fico indicates changes to media legislation

Premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on Tuesday admitted that the coalition might adopt changes to media legislation, pointing to a need to introduce the right to rectification and response and the regulation of prerequisites necessary for carrying out the work of a journalist.

"Lawyers, notaries, judges and jurists must have a university degree in law. Why shouldn't it be the case that only those who are either journalism graduates or have undergone some kind of retraining will be journalists? You should be part of maybe some professional bodies in which you will have some disciplinary procedures like lawyers have," the Premier told journalists at a press conference.

Fico called the current state of affairs in the country's media a mess, which, in his opinion, doesn't exist in any other country of the European Union. In his opinion, journalists do whatever they want and bear no responsibility for it.
