Masaryk University in Brno awarded an honorary doctorate to former Slovak politician and diplomat Magdaléna Vášáryová on Thursday. The university recognized her as a leading figure in Czech-Slovak and Slovak international relations and diplomacy. Vášáryová was commended for her efforts to promote democracy and civil society in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Central Europe. Masaryk University highlighted her work in supporting women's equality, combating corruption, and defending democratic principles. During the ceremony, she remarked on the university's role in shaping knowledge for future generations. A former actress, Vášáryová began her political career after the Velvet Revolution and served as Czechoslovak ambassador to Vienna and Slovakia's first female presidential candidate in 1999. She has held various diplomatic and political positions, including serving as a member of the National Council for ten years.
