Slovak Parliament begins discussions on removing Justice and Culture Ministers

Slovak MPs began Friday's session with a proposal from opposition MP Mária Kolíková (SaS) to dismiss Justice Minister Boris Susko (Smer-SD). The agenda also includes a motion to remove Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová (SNS nominee).

The opposition seeks Susko's removal due to his decision to file an appeal and suspend the prison sentence of convicted former special prosecutor Dušan Kováčik until the Supreme Court’s ruling. Susko is also criticized for pushing changes to criminal codes but defends his actions as legally justified. Šimkovičová faces criticism for staffing changes at the Slovak National Theatre and Gallery, and for allegedly undermining public media and cultural institutions. She insists her actions are within her legal rights. Parliament was scheduled to vote on these issues in August but lacked quorum, and they were postponed again in September. Friday’s session will end by 4 p.m., with voting planned for Monday if discussions are extended.
