The establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic (CSR) played a significant role in preserving the national existence of Slovaks. The new state meant a radical change for the nation, which previously didn’t have any right to exist in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The first independent state of Czechs and Slovaks was born on 28 October 1918, when the Czechoslovak National Committee in Prague adopted a law on the establishment of an independent Czechoslovak Republic, proclaimed its creation and assumed state power. Today, 106 years have passed since this event. Slovakia commemorates the founding of the Czechoslovak Republic as a national holiday.
