On the 106th anniversary of Czechoslovakia's founding, President Peter Pellegrini honored the occasion, acknowledging it as a foundational step towards Slovakia's independence. Speaking at the Czechoslovak Statehood Memorial in Bratislava, he celebrated the friendship between Slovakia and the Czech Republic and praised the contributions of Milan Rastislav Štefánik to the establishment of the original state in 1918. He also pointed to the values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights, on which, according to him, the Czechoslovak Republic was founded even then.
"It is a great pity that the democratic part of our history lasted only a short time. It was interrupted by a world war and then we waited for decades to be able to live in a democratic state again. All of our efforts culminated on January 1, 1993, when we could celebrate the establishment of an independent and proud democratic Slovak Republic," said the President.
