Italy has taken back 23 tonnes of waste that it illegally exported to Slovakia, the Slovak Environment Inspectorate (SIZP) has posted on a social network, adding that the waste was stored in a warehouse in Trencin region and that the whole case is still under police investigation.
"Following the demanding collection of evidence and coordination between the Environment Ministry, the Zilina Environmental Inspectorate, the waste management inspection department and the Italian authorities, we managed to ensure that the respective Italian company covered all costs related to transporting the non-hazardous waste back to Italy," said SIZP.
The illegally imported waste from Italy was detected by environmental inspectors in cooperation with the National Central Unit for the Detection of Illegal Activity in Trencin in 2022.
