Šefčovič confident after EU Parliament hearing

Maroš Šefčovič, Slovakia's candidate for the European Commission, described his European Parliament hearing as “challenging but fair” after answering questions on his future role for over three hours. Šefčovič faced mainly questions about economic matters, trade relations and problems with EU partners, the contracts of the European Commission with pharmaceutical companies during the pandemic and the protection of the interests of European farmers.

According to the Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO) Sven Simon and the Chairman of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) Bernd Lange, who co-chaired Šefčovič's hearing, Šefčovič performed well. After the hearing they claimed that there is no doubt that Šefčovič will get the portfolio entrusted to him. When asked if his chances were jeopardized by some actions of the current Slovak government, both said that the interrogation process is not governed by the domestic political situation of the member countries, but by the professional preparation of the nominees.
