In January, Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová (SNS) declared that LGBTI+ projects would receive “not a cent” from her office, a statement confirmed in recent funding decisions. According to Denník N, the Culture Ministry’s subsidy program for disadvantaged groups excluded all LGBTI+ projects, including events such as the Drama Queer festival, Dúhový Pride, and the Film festival inakosti, despite their high ratings from the expert commission. Directors and founders of a number of organizations and initiatives expressed their disappointment about Šimkovičová’s decision, stating that it is evidence of the discrimination faced by the LGBTI+ community in Slovakia.
Ministry spokesperson Petra Bačinská stated that the commission’s recommendations are advisory, with the minister having final say over funding allocation. Advocates argue that the decision contradicts the principle of equal treatment stated in the ministry’s funding laws.
LGBTI+ organizations are now seeking alternative funding sources, noting that the ministry's decision significantly impacts their ability to operate and host events. Representatives from Nomantinels, Iniciatíva Inakosť, and other groups are concerned about the future of queer cultural projects in Slovakia.
