The government plans to save 2.7 billion euros next year. In addition to higher VAT, it also wants to reduce the number of employees in state offices. Ten per cent of people in the civil service will lose their jobs. Matúš Šutaj Eštok, Minister of the Interior and chairman of the Hlas-SD party, has confirmed that his department will also lay off people. The government wants to contribute to the consolidation of public finances.
The redundancies in the state administration are also welcomed by the opposition. Progressive Slovakia has long argued that the state should save mainly on its own administration.
