Electoral commission will not address Šutaj Eštok's campaign actions

The State Election Commission will not address the actions of Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas-SD) during his campaign for the presidential elections. Non-governmental organizations pointed out Šutaj Eštok allegedly discrediting a candidate through paid social media posts, and filed a complaint with the election commission. However, the commission stated that it is bound by the Slovak Constitution and can only act within the scope set by law.

According to the Ministry spokesperson Matej Neumann, Šutaj Eštok does not interfere with the independence of the election commission, and there was no need to comment on the accusations from the anti-corruption foundation and other organizations. The Foundation Zastavme korupciu, translated to Stop corruption disagreed with the decision, claiming that it shows how rules aren’t applied equally in Slovakia. Foundation director Zuzana Petková questioned the independence of the authorities involved and noted they had also submitted the case to the General Prosecutor's Office.
