Economy Minister: Nuclear power plants stockpile fuel for two and half years

Nuclear power plants in Slovakia have stockpiled nuclear fuel for two and half years, Economy Minister Denisa Sakova (Hlas-SD) announced at a press conference on Thursday.

In its dealings with the supplier, Slovenske Elektrarne (SE) power utility also employed its right of refusal to ensure a sufficient amount of nuclear fuel until 2030.

With respect to the plan to build a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice, Sakova reported that a construction permit has already been issued. "In addition, we already have the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as well, which grants us a superior advantage to all other neighboring countries that are still in the process of running tenders for new nuclear power plants, but don't have these permits yet," she stated.

Specific timetables for the construction works and financing are yet to be announced in the following weeks.

In May, the Government greenlighted the project to build a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovske Bohunice with rated power of up to 1,200 MW while making use of the existing infrastructure of Slovakia's first nuclear power plant.
