Slovakia Joins Brazilian Initiative against Hunger and Poverty

Slovakia has joined a Brazilian initiative against hunger and poverty, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanar (Smer-SD) officially confirmed during Monday's meeting with Brazilian Ambassador to Slovakia Gabriel Boff Moreira.

"Slovakia is joining the countries that support the proper and timely implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in the fight against hunger and poverty," said the minister. According to the ministry, the initiative, which consists of three main pillars, aims to coordinate the activities of national governments to eradicate hunger, which, according to available data, affects more than 700 million people worldwide. "According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), this number could increase by an additional 132 million by 2030," the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs added.

The formal launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will take place at the G20 Summit of the international forum of the world's largest economies in Rio de Janeiro, which is being chaired by Brazil. Slovakia has joined the initiative through a declaration of commitment and is a founding member, along with other countries and international organisations, the ministry added.
