The Biela vrana (White Crow) award for civic courage and defence of the public good was presented for the 17th time. Four stories united by "fidelity to the deepest values of their missions, which they do not lose even after pressure and sanctions, but also by the defence of democratic institutions and pillars" were awarded. The award was presented on Monday evening.
"The stories of this year's Biela vrana clearly show the importance of defending democratic pillars for the future of Slovakia, whether in the public or private sphere. They demonstrate its various forms, from inside institutions, from the outside, whether in civic or artistic forms," said Zuzana Wienk, a member of the White Crow Council.
The first laureate was Milan Olekšák, a lifelong conservationist. The second prize-winning story was a journalistic rebellion against interference in the performance of work at Markíza TV, led by Adel Ghannam, Michal Kovačič and Viktor Vincze. The third laureate was long-time prosecutor Michal Šúrek and the fourth laureate of the White Crow award for long-term contribution is visual artist Ilona Németh.
