Unemployment rate at record low of 5.88 percent in October

The registered unemployment rate in Slovakia for October was the lowest since 1993, at 5.88 percent, with only 163,841 people unemployed, and in no district did unemployment exceed 10 percent, said Labour Minister Erik Tomas (Hlas-SD) at a press conference on Tuesday.

"We have the lowest unemployment figures partially thanks to new unemployment assessment criteria, which have applied since January 2021. The proportion of jobseekers in the working-age population was 4.51 percent in October, and the number of available jobseekers of working age was 3.77 percent in October," said Tomas.

Tomas stressed that several projects launched by the Labour Ministry are currently contributing to lower unemployment. These are employment-support programmes, such as financial incentives, skills for the labour market and projects financed by the European Social Fund. According to the minister, a total of 7,791 new jobs have been created via these programmes.
