The public procurement process for building a new nuclear power plant in Jaslovské Bohunice is expected to begin next year, with a supplier contract to be signed by April 2027, according to Minister of Economy Denisa Saková. "Initial construction work should take place in April 2032, the first loading of fuel in early 2038, and commissioning also in 2038," Saková said, adding that full operation is planned for 2040.
The total cost of the project is estimated at €10 billion, based on experience in the Czech Republic and Hungary. Saková highlighted that construction costs increase by 8-10% annually if delayed, stressing the need for a tight construction schedule.
Slovakia benefits from a 2022 location permit from the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority and has a team of experts working on the completion of reactors three and four at the Mochovce nuclear plant. "We also have enough water, which is needed for the cooling process. We have a prepared area in the area of Jaslovské Bohunice, and we greatly appreciate that the approach of the Slovak population to nuclear energy is very positive," she added.
The new plant is expected to generate 1,200 MW, with the potential to expand to 1,700 MW. The Ministry of Economy emphasized the involvement of Slovak businesses in the supplier selection process to maximize domestic capacity.
