Domestic violence, the silent epidemic

Domestic violence, the silent epidemic

On the International Day for the elimination of violence against women, the Ministry of the Interior emphasized that combating domestic violence requires systemic effort, collaboration, and awareness. The Ministry focuses on prevention through campaigns, seminars, and informational materials, and since 2019, information centers have assisted 2,812 clients, including 327 cases of domestic violence. This year, 821 crimes against minors have been reported, including 276 cases of sexual abuse. The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) described domestic violence as a silent epidemic that destroys lives and society, pointing to the normalization of aggression and vulgarization of public space. In the last six years, women have made up 86% of domestic violence victims, and 52 women were murdered by their partners. KDH also criticized the insufficient funding for organizations helping victims and recommended that women in danger use help lines or the closed fist signal. President Peter Pellegrini condemned all violence, including that against women and girls, and joined the "Orange the World" campaign to raise awareness.
