Prime Minister Robert Fico has accepted the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the official celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in Moscow. The opposition has criticised the Prime Minister’s planned trip to Moscow.
According to Slovak President Petr Pellegrini, only time will tell whether Prime Minister Robert Fico will go to Moscow for the celebrations of the end of the Second World War, but it is his right.
Michal Šimečka, chair of the opposition Progressive Slovakia party, sees several reasons behind Fico’s trip to Moscow. In his opinion, the prime minister wants to divert attention from the fact that his coalition is falling apart, his expensive policies are being heaped on the people and his government nominees are failing. “However, all three motives are united by one thing – complete cluelessness and harm to Slovakia’s interests,” he pointed out.
The Prime Minister accepted an invitation to attend the celebrations from Russian President Putin. After the government meeting in Topoľčianky, Fico said that he wanted to honour the memory of the fallen soldiers at the Russian celebrations. He noted that the Soviet Union had helped in the Slovak National Uprising and the Red Army had liberated Slovakia.
