A total of 30.3 percent of people in Slovakia felt they lived in poverty in 2023, which amounts to a 3.7-percent growth in comparison to 2020 and the third highest value in the EU, the Institute for Strategy and Analysis (ISA) has pointed out based on Eurostat data.
The European average in terms of perceived poverty equals 24.1 percent. ISA underlines, however, that there's a significant gap between perceived poverty and the risk of actual poverty.
"In Slovakia, the gap between the rate of perceived poverty and the share of people actually endangered by poverty stood at 16 percentage points, which is the second highest gap in EU after Greece," stated ISA.
ISA added that the risk of poverty, measured as a proportion of people on income below 60 percent of median income, equals 14.3 percent, a figure below the EU average. One of the potential explanations is the low income inequality in Slovakia.
