PS tops newest poll

If a parliamentary election had been held in mid-December, it would have been won by the opposition Progressive Slovakia (PS) on 22.8 percent of votes, followed by the governing Smer-SD (20.3 percent) and Hlas-SD (13.9 percent) parties, according to a recent poll carried out by AKO agency on behalf of Joj 24 television channel.

Ending up fourth would have been the opposition KDH (7.3 percent), followed by SaS (6.6 percent), the coalition of the 'Slovakia' party, Christian Union (KU) and Za ludi (6.2 percent), and extra-parliamentary Republic (5.4 percent).

Parties failing to make it past the 5-percent election threshold would have included the junior governing SNS (4.6 percent), and the extra-parliamentary Democrats (4.3 percent), Sme rodina (3.8 percent), and Hungarian Alliance (3.2 percent).

Based on the polls, PS would have garnered 42 seats in Parliament, followed by Smer-SD - 37, Hlas-SD - 25, KDH -13, SaS - 12, the 'Slovakia', KU, Za ludi coalition - 11, and Republic - 10.

The poll was carried out on a sample of 1,000 respondents between December 16-19.
