Slovakia resumes imports of radioactive waste in 2025

Radioactive waste from abroad can once again be imported into Slovakia. As of January 1, the ban on such imports, introduced in 2021, has been lifted. The change to the Environment Act was passed in Parliament as part of the new Critical Infrastructure Act. Under the amended Radiation Protection Act, the strict ban on importing radioactive waste for treatment purposes has been replaced with a conditional allowance. Import is now permitted if the requirements outlined in the Atomic Act are met and an optimization study for radioactive waste treatment is approved. Additionally, the authority of the Slovak Public Health Service has been expanded to include the approval of these optimization studies.
