The European Commission's meeting with representatives from Slovakia and Ukraine, scheduled for January 7, to discuss the suspension of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, was canceled due to Kyiv's absence. The European Commission is seeking an alternative date.
Ukraine stopped the transit last week after the contract between Gazprom and Naftohaz expired. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico criticized the move and warned of possible cuts to electricity for Ukraine and reduced support for Ukrainian refugees. Fico claims that Slovakia could lose nearly 500 million EUR in transit fees and suggested restarting gas transit or getting compensation. Gas transit through Slovakia had already been decreasing before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and dropped significantly afterward. Slovakia's main gas supplier, SPP, secured alternative deals, but these are more expensive due to higher transit costs.
