Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico plans to address in Brussels today the nearly 1.5 billion euros in damages that he believes Ukraine has caused Slovakia by halting gas transit. He made this statement yesterday in a video shared on social media. “The European Commission clearly states in its official letter that nothing prevents Ukraine from continuing transit—neither European law nor sanctions,” Fico said, adding that Zelensky’s decision is expected to result in approximately 70 billion euros in damages for the EU.
At the end of 2024, the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory expired, and Kyiv decided not to renew it. In response, the Slovak Prime Minister announced the potential adoption of reciprocal measures, including halting electricity supplies and reducing aid to the Ukrainian population in Slovakia.
