The U.S. Ambassador to Slovakia, Gautam Rana, on Wednesday honored human rights defenders in Slovakia. Individuals were recognized in three categories for their exceptional work and impact on Slovak society.
In the "Women of Courage" category, Rana honored humanitarian worker and public health expert Lucia Roussier and pastor Anna Polcková. Roussier was recognized for her unwavering commitment to upholding humanitarian principles. Polcková was praised for her dedication to building inclusive societies and supporting those in need.
The Ján Kuciak Transparency Award was given to former journalist, analyst, and deputy director of the Stop Corruption Foundation, Xénia Makarová. "Despite threats, she has demonstrated persistent courage in uncovering corruption. She continues to expose transactions that would otherwise remain hidden from the public and advocates for greater transparency and accountability," the embassy explained.
The Human Rights Defender Award was presented to Pavel Hrica, director of the nonprofit organization Cesta von (Way Out). Through the Omama program, Hrica has empowered Roma women and provided hundreds of children with educational and developmental opportunities.
These awards highlight the important contributions of human rights defenders and advocates for the rule of law whose work significantly impacts Slovak society. "Despite the challenges they face, their efforts have a tangible impact on their communities. Slovak civil society and independent media are vibrant and resilient, playing a key role in protecting the principles and freedoms that unite and strengthen us," Rana emphasized.
