Confined in cages: Will the future be brighter for Slovak hens?

Confined in cages: Will the future be brighter for Slovak hens?

As awareness about the living conditions of farmed animals rises, people tend to be more concerned about the origins of the products they're buying. According to an opinion poll conducted in December 2019, more than 60% of people in Slovakia are against confining hens in cages and would support phasing this farming method out. Nevertheless, despite the fact that 59% of the respondents think that supermarkets and restaurants should not sell eggs from caged hens, more than 2.5 million hens are kept in cages in Slovakia, which makes it by far the most used farming method in the country. In order to shed some light on the issue, Romana Grajcarová discussed it with Martin Smrek from the Humánny pokrok (Humane progress) animal advocacy group.
