Pieter Cullis is a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of British Columbia in Canada and the founder of several biotechnology companies involved in the research and development of cancer therapies. He is a strong believer in personalized medicine, arguing that the current attitude in the medical world which ignores the individual needs and characteristics of a patient and delivers drugs "en masse" without too much concern for their efficiency in treating that particular patient, is counterproductive. Cullis who delivered a speech at the ITAPA conference in Bratislava last week believes that each of us should have an "omic profiling", a map of our body containing data from the genome, 240 proteins, about 300 substances involved in metabolism and about 1,000 bacteria living in the gastrointestinal tract. This mix should tell not only what kind of diseases we are at risk of developing thus helping their early detections but also warn that it might not be a good idea to be prescribed a certain drug either. Sounds like science fiction?
