Slovak biodegradable plastics ready for mass production

Humankind loves plastics. Despite growing public awareness of the negative environmental impact of traditional oil-based plastics, plastic use has increased 20-fold in the last 50 years, with growth expected to continue rising, according to a report from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in cooperation with the World Health Organisation. Moving to wood and paper isn't an ideal solution for most applications, so what's needed is an eco-friendly alternative. Enter Professor Pavol Alexy at the institute for natural and synthetic polymers within the Slovak Technical University. After many years of effort, his Slovak-engineered, versatile biodegradable plastic is ready to enter mass-production. Gavin Shoebridge spoke to Professor Alexy in his labs to find out more.
