The average time spent by patients in hospitals should decrease according to a new concept presented by Health Minister Andrea Kalavská (a Smer-SD nominee) on Friday. "The global trend is to shorten hospitalisation time, to provide more one-day care. So the target is also to reduce the number of acute beds and increase the number for those with long-term illnesses," explained Kalavská. Over the next 12 years Slovak hospitals should be divided into three types. The first type should provide general health care, the second would focus on specialised care and the third would be highly specialised, where, for example, cardiac surgeries would be done, the health minister explained.
