A hydrometeorologist remembers how secondary school science competitions shaped his future career

Today Ján Mašek does highly sophisticated numerical weather modelling at the hydrometeorological institute in Prague, but he first learned the skills needed to embark on this career during his secondary school years. This was not, however, mainly due to his physics classes at school, but rather to his participation in something which Slovak secondary students have priviledged access to: science competitions in which they meet with, and learn from, real scientists who have made achievements in their own fields. Jonathan speaks with Ján to find out just how important these competitions were in shaping his career.
