The Danube is the second largest river in Europe and flows through central and southeastern Europe, from the Black Forest into the Black Sea. On its 2850 km long journey, it passes through 10 European countries, while at the same time increasing its volume with each new kilometre. Interestingly enough, there are more than 900 islands on the Danube that are home to special fauna and flora. However, due to human activities and artificial interventions into the natural river dynamics, many of these islands have deteriorated over the past decades and now need to be restored. In order to find out more, I discussed the topic of the Danube islands and their restoration with Andrea Froncová from the Regional Association for Nature Conservation and Sustainable Development.
