Ground squirrels live in numerous colonies in Slovakia. They are most widespread around the Bratislava airport. However, their numbers have been declining rapidly over the years. Gophers are now considered to be an endangered species. Zoologists have to set up rescue operations. Marianna Palkova visited this meadow and met the zoologist Erwin Hapl, who is monitoring the situation. Ecologist Andrea Froncova explains that it's a logistically challenging operation. Captured ground squirrels cannot be kept in portable containers for long and need to be moved to new locations as quickly as possible.
