Slovakia has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. The Accession Treaty was signed in 2003 - in full accordance with the wishes of the citizens, as a clear majority voted in favour of joining the EU in a referendum, almost 94% of voters. However, the road to accession has been a difficult one...
