Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route

Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route

The Regional Tourism Organisation (KOCR) in the Nitra region wants to move forward with the construction of the Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route. What is it actually? Let’s start by introducing the people, whose name these road carries.

Cyril (born Constantine) and Methodius lived in the 9th century. These brothers were Byzantine Christian theologians and missionaries. For their work evangelizing the Slavs, they are known as the "Apostles to the Slavs". In 863, they were sent by the Byzantine Emperor Michael III to Great Moravia to spread Christianity among the West Slavs in the area. They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, which later developed into the Cyrillic alphabet which is used for writing in Russian, Bulgarian, Serbian and Ukrainian. And now, let’s jump to the route.
