Tips for trips around Slovakia III

If you are a breakfast and brunch lover, come to the Bratislava City Museum on Saturday 15 July to enjoy your favourite meal of the day. You'll also enjoy the view from the Old Town Hall Tower and get a glimpse of the tower's history on your way to breakfast. See what it looked like in centuries past, peek into the office of the eminent archivist Ovidius Faustus or stroll through the exposition of the city's past.

Or enjoy a medieval picnic at Stupava in Kaštiel Park on Saturday. As well as good food, there will be sword fighting, period music and various activities. Children can try their hand at fencing with knights.

The Spišské trhy or Spiš Fair in Spišská Nová Ves continues the tradition of annual markets based on privileges granted by the king. It has a history of more than 50 years and is one of the oldest events of its kind in Slovakia. The Spiš Fair takes place in mid-July on the main square and surrounding streets of the town of Spišská Nová Ves. This year it starts on Thursday 13th July and lasts until Sunday. A rich cultural and entertainment programme is also a part of the fair, which offers a lot of music and fun and lasts as an open-air event until the early hours of the morning. The four-day event is also very popular with the fair's youngest visitors, for whom the numerous merry-go-rounds of almost every imaginable type are a kind of Slovak Disneyland.

The Central Slovak Museum in Banská Bystrica is organising an event called Nature without Borders. On Tuesday, 11 July at 5 pm in the Tihányi Mansion you will be immersed in the world of science. With ecologist Vladimir Kubovcik you will learn more about the scientific field of PALEOECOLOGY. Dana Kurtíková, the museum's PR manager, says that this area has brought many interesting findings. “The importance of palaeoecological studies has grown rapidly in recent years. Although this science has been developing since the middle of the last century, in our country, its importance has not been fully appreciated. At the same time, it is a scientific discipline that is crucial for understanding the current shape of the world. Palaeoecology is important for the geological understanding of our planet and life.” Concludes Dana Kurtíková.
