Slovak cuisine in the modern period

In the modern era Slovakia was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. It was a multinational country, so Slovak cuisine was influenced not only by the climate, but also by many cultures and religions. Especially after the Battle of Mohacs in the sixteenth century, the Ottoman Empire had a great impact. The Turks brought products such as coffee, beans and tomatoes to the Slovak land.

In the modern period, food was also a symbol of a person's status. Wealthier people in particular took care not only of the quality of the food, but also of the serving and the staff. Historian from the Slovak Academy of Science, Tünde Lengyelová, says that the three main pillars of the diet in the Kingdom of Hungary were meat, bread and wine.
