September 1 is the Constitution Day in Slovakia. It commemorates the adoption of the Slovak constitution on the 1st of September 1992, 4 months before the establishment of the Slovak Republic. This year for the first time, the Constitution Day is not a day off work – the government has adopted this step with the aim of consolidating public finances. So shops will for example be open on this day. Nevertheless, we will mark this day with features and interviews from our archives that will explain how the Slovak constitution came to be, what its importance is and if there are any parts that could be updated.
Last year, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Slovak Republic, Ben Pascoe and Marianna Palková went into streets to find out how much do teenagers know about the Slovak Constitution.
