On Friday, July 31, the League against Cancer (LPR) is organizing a fundraiser to help cancer patients. The so-called Daffodil Day event, which usually takes place in April, had to be rescheduled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Daffodil Day Special takes place online and will run through August 14th.
Due to the hygienic restrictions, the volunteers will not sell daffodils on the streets, but people can contribute and receive daffodils at several grocery store networks and drugstores.
According to the executive director of the League against Cancer, Eva Kováčová, the funds from the Daffodil Day will be used for the implementation of projects such as online-counselling centre, individual and group psychological counselling, retreats for oncology patients as well as the material equipment for hospitals. Kováčová also noted that cancer patients are one of the risk groups during the pandemic. According to organisation's findings, during this period patients' fears increased by 200%.
Based on the data from the National Centre for Health Information, there is more than 226,000 cancer patients in Slovakia. It is estimated that there will be approximately 40,000 new cases by 2020.
