Wildlife in cages and illegal trade with tigers is becoming a big topic in Europe. In 2019, Four Paws – an animal welfare organisation - launched an investigation into the number of live tigers held in zoos, rescue centres, circuses, and in private ownership. Based on the available data, privately owned tigers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia account for approximately 93% of all tigers held privately within the EU. According to the data from the Slovak Environmental Inspectorate, there is a total of 24 keepers of big cats in Slovakia, with few exceptions of zoos, these are private owners. These days, the Slovak Environmental Ministry is working on new legislation to prevent misuse of the private breeding of wild animals. Zuzana Botiková looked closer on the topic.
