Citizens of the United Kingdom and their family members who have applied for or will apply for residency in Slovakia at the Foreigners Police before January 1, 2021 will be granted the right of residency for the next few years or even indefinitely directly according to a newly approved law without the need for further proceedings. The law was signed by President Zuzana Caputova on Thursday.
Slovakia has opted for a declaratory system of residency, so it is enough for British citizens who already have residency to ask for a new ID card confirming this residency. Those who have had uninterrupted permanent residency in Slovakia for at least five years will be given the right of permanent residency for an indefinite time [the new ID card in this case is valid for ten years - ed. note]. Meanwhile, those who have lived in Slovakia for less than five years will be given the right to long-term residency lasting five years.
British nationals who have been staying in Slovakia without registration but can prove by the end of 2020 that they have met the conditions for the registration of residency as EU citizens will be able to register for residency lasting five years.
