Ján Juraj Rainer, also known as Johann Georg Rainer, was born in 1800 in Spišská Sobota. He was an important Hungarian businessman, a tenant of Starý Smokovec, and one of the founders of tourism in the High Tatras. In the mid 19th century he saw the potential to attract guests from all over the Habsburg monarchy to Smokovec, who would otherwise have been seeking similar activities in the Austrian Alps. Rainer understood that visitors are especially attracted by the mountains and the opportunity to walk and hike in them. And that brings us to the chalet he built there in the second half of the 19th century. Natalia Grestyová will tell us more about the chalet and its current famous resident.
