May 8, also known as Victory in Europe Day, is celebrated in Slovakia as the Victory over facsism Day. This year it coincided with the second Sunday in May, which is traditionally observed as Mother's Day. Well, and furthermore, it coincided with the visit of USA's first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, to Slovakia. On Sunday, she met with Ukrainian refugee mothers and their children, who live in the eastern Slovak town of Košice. Radio Slovakia International was present at this special occasion.

USA's first lady's visit to Romania and Slovakia, and especially her unannounced detour to Ukraine to meet the first lady Olena Zelenska in Uzhhorod, made headlines in the international press. Commentators looked into the symbolics of such a visit for the region, but also for the US policy towards Ukraine. So what is the bigger picture of such a travel itinerary? Zuzana Botiková discussed it with Myra Gutin, Professor for Communications in the Rider University, and president of the First Ladies Association for Research and Education.
